Second Generation

The Second generation of software occurred in the early 1950's with the development of assembly language. By using assembly language the programmer was able to use mnemonic codes, names (like add, sub, load) for the machine language operator and operand rather than the Os and 1s. The translation of assembly code into machine code was accomplished by an assembler. The assembler is software tool that translate the assembly language mnemonics into machines language. But an assembler still works on a very low level with the machine. For each processor, a different assembler was written.
